+++++++++

From July 7 to July 14, we'll be celebrating with a Freedom to Independence: Transit Week of Action to uplift transit as a mode of transportation for all of us, whether we are able to drive and own a car or not. Without methods to get to work, school, health care and other opportunities, our independence is limited.

As we reflect on the freedom and independence we enjoy as Americans, let's remember that many people here in Wisconsin are still lacking freedom of mobility every day because of an underfunded and underdeveloped public transportation system.

It’s time to change that. RSVP now to join us for a Week of Action for public transit from 7/7 to 7/14!

In much of Wisconsin, local roads remain in disrepair, and non-driving modes of transportation like public transit and walking and biking options are extremely limited. Young people increasingly prefer non-driving options, and often choose where to live based on the availability of public transit. Additionally, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people who can’t afford to drive are barred from accessing work, school and social activities without access to a car. And yet, state leaders continue to pour billions of dollars into massive highway expansion projects rather than fund local transportation priorities.

The Sierra Club is a committed member of the Coalition for More Responsible Transportation (CMRT), and next week, we’re going to join our partners around the state, like the La Crosse Area Transit Advocates to take action. Help us show state and local leaders that public transportation is critical to Wisconsinites’ independence and quality of life.

We want to change the transportation landscape in Wisconsin. Help us create a transportation system that really works for everyone.

RSVP here to be a part of the Week of Action!

Why do we need better transit?

* Equity: thousands of our fellow citizens can't get to good jobs, shopping, appointments, and entertainment because they don't or can't drive private vehicles and the bus service, if it exists in their communities, doesn't meet those transportation needs.

Health: switching from single occupant fossil-fueled vehicles to public transit reduces air pollution and its associated health effects. Plus, those who take transit are less stressed and, as active transportation users, fitter.

Family Finances: In most cases, commuters save money ditching their private cars and taking public transit plus no scraping and shoveling, waiting for the heater, looking force parking space, feeding the meter.

Community budgets: Public transit can reduce in-town congestion and the costs of providing parking and storage for hundreds of commuter cars.

Environmental sustainability: Private vehicles are one of the top sectors for green house gas emissions. Addressing the climate crisis means moving away from private fossil-fueled cars. If we can move to public transit and "de-carbonize" buses by fueling them with renewably produced electricity, we'll go a long way toward fighting the climate crisis.
